HYDROSOLS

What are hydrosols?

Hydrosols are solutions in which liquid is water, with the healing benefits of essential oils and their aroma. They are produced at the time of steam distillation of essential oils of flowers, roots, herbs, spices, etc…

During steam distillation, the plant material is heated and the steam transports the volatile compounds of the plant, including essential oils, through condensation. The condensate, as well as the aromatic and water-soluble components of the plant are collected separately. This resulting water is hydrosol. Hydrolates contain traces of essential oils, as well as other water-soluble components of plants, which give them their delicate aroma and therapeutic properties. They have a milder fragrance than essential oils and are commonly used in skin care, aromatherapy, and natural remedies. Hydrosols can be used directly on the skin, added to a bath, used as a facial mist, or incorporated into homemade skin care products.

Properties of hydrosols are similar to essential oils, these aromatic waters are much less concentrated and their aroma is subtle and soft. We can say they are the important co-products of essential oils during distillation
