ABSOLUTE OILS

What are Absolute Oils?

In order to understand what are absolute oils, it is better first to understand the process of extraction of essential oil and absolute oil from any plant source.

Absolute oils are extracted through the solvent extraction process. In this process, the plant material is extracted with a hydrocarbon solvent to yield concrete. The concrete is then extracted with ethyl alcohol. The ethyl alcohol extract material is cooled up to −15 °C to solidify waxes. After removal of waxes, ethyl alcohol evaporates yielding absolute oils.

Absolute oil is solvent distilled whereas essential oil is steam distilled.

Absolute oils are heavier and thicker than most essential oils. Absolute oils may contain trace amounts of wax, solvents, pigments, and ethyl alcohol. Generally, solvent extraction is used on plant material that is more delicate for example jasmine.

When Jasmine is steam distilled, very little oil is produced and the oil does not have such a sweet aroma as solvent extracted jasmine.

Commonly used Absolute oils are Jasmine, Rose, Tuberose, Geranium, Lavender, etc.
